Valley braces for another round of wind

A high wind warning went into effect Friday in Riverside County, where forecasters are expecting winds of between 25 and 35 mph and gusts to 60 mph.

The warning issued by the National Weather Service went into effect at 6 a.m. and is scheduled to expire at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Winds will be strongest through and below passes and canyons, including the Cajon and Banning passes in the Inland Empire, the agency advised.

"Strong winds will make driving difficult, especially for motorists with high profile vehicles," according to the Weather Service. "Freeways most likely to be impacted by strong winds include interstates 10 and 15, and highways 60, 91 and 55.

It was a close call for American Cab, the largest cab service in the Coachella Valley. The cab company could have been shut down Wednesday due to a dispute over its ownership change but a new interim attorney concluded American Cab did not violate any rules.

"It's reassuring that it's water under the bridge now because there are 85 of us who were at risk of losing our jobs," said Peter Kurzon, a cab driver.

But for several months, Kurzon and another 80 plus employees at American Cab were fearful of losing their jobs.

Come and join the Desert Hot Springs High School Varsity Football team in a Youth Football Clinic. The clinics are open to any child aged 6-14. There will be six clinic days: January 28 and 39, March 3 and 4, and May 5 and 6.

The Saturday clinics will run from 8am-Noon and the Sunday clinics will run from 1pm-5pm. The cost for the clinics is $15.00 for one or all of the clinics and includes a t-shirt.

Palm Springs man arrested in connection to Sky Valley murder

A Palm Springs man suspected of murdering a man whose body was found in the unincorporated county area of Sky Valley was behind bars Tuesday.

Jason William Brokken, 45, was arrested Monday in connection with the man's death, sheriff's Sgt. Herman Lopez said. The body was found Sunday on the side of the road on Rudder Row Lane, south of Dillon Road, in Sky Valley.

This February Stroke Recovery Center celebrates “FOR THE LOVE OF ART” throughout the month with various fundraisers. Concluding this artful celebration is our Auxiliary’s 5th ANNUAL JURIED ART SHOW, held at Stroke Recovery Center, located at 2800 E. Alejo Rd. in Palm Springs. The show runs from February 24th through March 16th, Monday through Fridays 8:30am to 3:30pm.  This annual event showcases the best creative work of residents of the Coachella Valley. Artists may submit up to three works and art must be submitted on Tuesday, February 21st between 10:00am to 12:30pm. The entry fee is $25 per piece and artwork must be original and completed in the last two years. Artwork will be juried by local artists, Elaine Mathews and Terry Masters with awards for Best of Show and First Place at $100 each, Second Place at $75 and Third Place will be awarded $50.
